Kyle Davis has been teaching science since the first time he stepped into a classroom. While he initially thought this would be a temporary position until he figured out his long-term career path, he’s still going strong. This year he is Mid-Pacific’s International Baccalaureate (IB) Biology and Environmental System Science teacher.
“My dad was a teacher at the high school that I attended, so I kind of thought, ‘why not try this?’ Originally, I did consider it as a position that would just be temporary until I figured out what I wanted to do,” Davis said.
While figuring out a path, teaching allowed Davis to pursue his passion for science. His father, a health and physical education teacher, may have passed the teaching gene down to him, but Davis carved his own path through his love for biology.
“Science was always just something that I was really passionate about. I really liked biology; my true passion is anatomy and physiology, so I have an advanced degree in that,” Davis said.
Throughout his 26 years of experience, Davis taught at both Maryknoll and Kamehameha before landing at Mid-Pacific. He spent seven years at Maryknoll and two years at Kamehameha. Despite teaching at various different schools, he feels Mid-Pacific is the right fit for him. In fact, Davis described it like a Goldilocks moment.
“This school I felt, for me, was the right size with the right facilities with the same kind of mission, vision and values that I was looking for. So it was kind of like my perfect fit,” Davis said.
Besides Davis’s passion for teaching, he also has passions about sports and physical activity. If he wasn’t a teacher, he would have pursued a career as a professional athlete, in athletic training, or as a physical therapist. He’s always been into sports and played a variety of them.
“I played football, basketball, and track in high school, and then I did one year of basketball in college, and I played rugby in college,” Davis said.
Despite not becoming a professional athlete or athletic trainer, Davis has gotten to pursue sports and physical activity by being a coach alongside teaching.
“The entire 26 years that I’ve been teaching, I’ve coached track the entire time but I’ve also coached basketball and cross country sporadically throughout those years,” Davis said.
Outside of school, Davis continues his passion for sports and physical activity by running his own strength and conditioning company and is Vice President of USA Track and Field Hawai’i.
“I actually coach some college kids remotely online, and work with athletes [on] writing up their workout programs and things like that,” Davis said.
When he’s not grading papers or coaching, Davis enjoys science fiction through reading and television shows.
“My all-time favorite book series is The Wheel of Time, so I’m into that. I liked Game of Thrones and House of Dragons, but I just kind of looked for some random sci-fi-ish shows. [Also], Tales from the Loop which was again science-fiction type shows,” Davis said.
Davis is not only a science teacher, but he is also a coach, sci-fi fan, athlete, and someone passionate about helping students succeed.
“I’m happy and excited to be here and look forward to becoming a little bit more integrated into and a part of our community here at Mid-Pacific,” Davis said.
