The first few seconds of Sombr’s new album “I Barely Know Her” give off an emotional but calm feel. The album isn’t loud or flashy, it’s the kind of track that makes you stop and actually listen. With its slow beat and soft vocals, Sombr’s music feels like the kind of song you would play while staring out a car window.
When the young music artist Sombr, or Shane Boose, dropped his hit single Caroline back in 2022, something changed. What started out as a bedroom recording project, has turned into a full-blown musical statement. More recently, Sombr has been creating sensational songs that have caught the attention of many fans around the world. With his new found popularity, he has also recently won a Video Music Award (VMA) for Best Alternative for his new single Back to Friends.
Sombr’s most recent album I Barely Know Her has skyrocketed in popularity, especially on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. With about 1.7 billion streams on Spotify, is this album worth the listen?
One of the best things about this album is the real emotion that goes into each song. Songs like “Talk Me Down” and “June Again” have personal and honest lyrics. Each song is very well written and feels clean and catchy. Sombr does a good job with keeping the album interesting with a variety of slow and upbeat songs.
Although all of the songs are clearly well made, some parts of the album sound a little too similar to each other. These songs blend in together because of the similar vibe they share. Also, some lyrics feel just a little too vague, like he’s trying to be deep but can’t say enough. Though, these are small issues and the album is overall still standing strong.
The bottom line is, Sombr is a talented music artist who brings a lot of emotion to the table, so I Barely Know Her comes with its own sort of mood. If you like artists like Conan Gray or Steve Lacy, you’ll probably enjoy this one.
