A freshman staying up late to study. A sophomore sleeping during class after a long night of studying. Students at Mid-Pacific stress a lot over studying for tests. Some students also have extracurricular activities that end late at night. After their practice or rehearsal is finished they have to stay up late to study again. Some students tend to study late for just one test, but having another one can be more tiring.
Having back-to-back assessments can be hard to prepare for, especially when students have extracurricular activities after school. Students who have outside activities like sports, theater, or club activities have to already stay up late studying for one test, but having more than one test to study for can be exhausting and tiring. Having to study for multiple tests can lead to anxiety and stress.
Having anxiety is bad for you because it can mess up the cognitive load, which represents the brain capacity to process information. When the cognitive load has an overdrive that’s when mental health starts declining. Also, having an overload can make it hard to focus, this can affect test performance.
Theater rehearsals can end really late at night and it can be really exhausting to study for a test
“It’s hard because with theater rehearsal, we can go to eight or nine at night sometimes,” freshman Kaila Henrikson said.
With extracurricular activities ending late it can be hard to study just for one test, but having more than one test can be even more stressful
After practice, rehearsals, or maybe other activities, students stay up late to study for their tests. Students can stay up for hours and study till 12 in the morning
“I slept late studying till 12 A.M,” freshman Haylen Antonio said.
Students who stay up late tend to fall asleep in other classes
“I think I’ve fallen asleep in Biology and Japanese,” Henrikson said.
Falling asleep in classes can affect the students and their learning.
Now, multiple tests can seem easier to other students, even with easier teachers or harder teachers, but it just matters how much you know about the topic the test is on
“I really think that multiple tests aren't that bad as long as you know your topic,” said freshman Khloe Young.
What if some students don’t understand their topic? Adding more tests to those students can cause them to be more stressed out, especially when they’re already busy with after-school activities.
I end practices at almost ten P.M. and when I have two tests to study for I stay up till twelve in the morning. Then the next day I’m tired and exhausted, which is how other students feel too. Sleep is important for students because less sleep can affect mental health and with the cognitive load. The cognitive load can affect tests performance and being tired can also make students struggle more when they’re taking tests.
Studying for multiple tests can be stressful for students and the more stress a student has the more it can affect their cognitive load and mental health. With the pressure of school grades it can be hard for students and more stressful for them
“I think that a lot of students struggle with a lot of tests, especially older students with full IB, and it requires them to stay up really late.” Young said.
