A new bombshell has entered the villa. She’s from Ohio. She’s 22 years old. And she’s a strawberry. That’s not a figure of speech; she’s a literal strawberry… like the fruit.
Ai.cinema021, AI Fruit Love Island’s account, began posting videos on March 13th introducing an all-fruit version of the wildly popular reality TV dating show, “Love Island.” This account has reached over 3 million followers and over 29 million likes in only a month.
ITV’s Love Island is the top-watched reality show in the U.S. where contestants are hosted at a villa and cause drama in hopes of finding a romantic match and remaining on the show, while its counterpart, Fruit Love Island, is the number 1 AI fruit show. AI Fruit Love Island is the first prominent tv show created by generative AI.
This AI spinoff features a cast of characters like Watermelina, a female watermelon, Plumero, a plum man, and other anthropomorphic fruit characters.
The show has divided netizens into two groups. One calls the show “AI slop,” and the other is a fanbase who truly enjoys the show and watches each new episode.
Fruit Love Island went overnight internet viral and became a social media hit.
“I guess because of the skyrocketing popularity, people were like, oh my gosh, I should hop on the trend, because after the trend started to die down, they found out, oh, they're not gonna be producing. Yeah, it's like trend hopping,” sophomore Maliyah Chang said.
Even celebrities like Joe Jonas of the Jonas Brothers have commented on the show and claimed that he watches it in a comment under a TikTok post, saying that he’s “worried about watermelina.” Swedish singer Zara Larsson also said that she tunes in through a later-deleted TikTok post.
AI Fruit Love Island is just another trend that people are obsessed with on TikTok. It's seen as entertaining and has a cast full of dramatic characters, drawing people in. It’s a fad that has been actively dying down due to lessening popularity. It’s short form content that replicates a real long-form tv show. Consuming so much short form content can lessen people’s attention span and continues the idea that social media shortens the ability to focus.
AI Cinema never even got permission from ITV Studios for copyright over Love Island or conferred with the real contestants on the show. The AI show copies the contestants on Love Island, like Amaya Espinal, the winner of Love Island USA season 7, who has a character named “Anaya Papaya” after her. The contestant does not support Fruit Love Island and says that Anaya Papaya is her “enemy.”
The AI show can’t show the real drama and emotions of the original series since it’s artificial intelligence. It makes a mockery of the real Love Island.
There is so much chaos and drama that human-led reality television shows have. Although heavily manufactured, the human emotions shine through and they feel more authentic. Shows like Love Island, Too Hot to Handle, and Single’s Inferno show real humans with real emotions and relationships.
“[AI Fruit Love Island] lacks the genuine emotion and reaction from everything. And then, I feel like it's pretty predictable, because it's following the script. So, yeah, real reality TV on top,” said Chang.
The creator of AI Fruit Love Island, AI Cinema, claimed that they spent hours of work on creating the show. In a TikTok story, they said that the work involves writing scripts, planning scenes, and constantly redoing elements because the "AI generation messes up constantly.”
But, since the show is made by generative AI, it obviously lacks the creativity and human touch that real reality tv shows possess. The show lacks imagination and whimsy and is just a remake of Love Island but with talking fruit. The creator isn’t using their own original ideas but making a huge fanbase and popularity out of it.
The show is in an animated style but didn’t hire any animators, just artificial intelligence.
“And I think that, if they were to actually hire real animators, it would have so much potential because as an animator and indie animator myself, things like [Fruit Love Island] put the animation community to shame,” said sophomore Cris George.
The show could have more potential and success if it was made by real people and animators. It would cause less controversy.
AI Cinema’s Fruit Love Island took the internet by storm and amassed millions of views, making AI fruit shows a trend. There’s so much content on the internet that features talking fruit. AI Fruit Love Island is a short form version of the real Love Island, but has no human spirit. “So, I feel like they're just lower quality, easily consumable versions of real content,” said sophomore Noah Hardy.
The internet loves short, entertaining videos and AI Fruit Love Island provides just that; easily consumable content.
